Juli 1922 in Reconvilier JU geboren. In Luzern, Freiburg (Schweiz) und Solothurn absolvierte er seine theologischen Studien, die er 1950 mit dem Doktorat in Theologie abschloss. Am 3. Juni 1983 best\u00e4tigte Papst Johannes Paul II. den gem\u00e4ss Bistumskonkordat von 1828 von Di\u00f6zesanbischof Mgr Dr. Otto W\u00fcst bezeichneten Kandidaten als Weihbischof von Basel und setzte ihn in dieses Amt ein. Seine Bischofsweihe empfing Mgr Dr. Joseph Candolfi am 29. Juni 1983. Er pr\u00e4sidierte die Schweizer Bischofskonferenz von 1989 bis 1991. Vom Amt des Weihbischofs trat er 1996 zur\u00fcck. Er ist Titularbischof von Frigento und Ehrendomherr des Standes Bern. Er verstarb in Bellach am 7.
