November 1939 in Basel geboren. Er studierte Philosophie und Theologie in Freiburg, M\u00fcnchen, Luzern, Paris und Solothurn (1959\u20131963). Er empfing die Priesterweihe am 28. Juni 1967 in Delsberg, 1967\u20131977 Vikar in St. Marien Bern und St. Josef Basel, 1977\u20131987 Pfarrer der Heiliggeist-Pfarrei Basel. Am 3. Februar 1987 ernannte ihn Papst Johannes Paul II. auf Vorschlag von Bischof Dr. Otto W\u00fcst zum Weihbischof des Bistums Basel. Mgr. G\u00e4chter ist Titularbischof von Betagbara in Numidien. Papst Franziskus hat den R\u00fccktritt von Weihbischof Martin G\u00e4chter am 22.
